A Day on the Farm

Working on the farm with Youth Farm Managers Elis and Cristy can be … “interesting.” I never know what they are going to do next! Forcing me to weed the garden or eat raw onions are among some of the hardships I face while working with them. The plants come first in this profession, and I make many sacrifices to keep them entertained. Earlier today, I pruned tomato plants to get fruits ready for our CSA members and farmers’ markets. By doing so, we help air circulate to prevent fungi and bacteria from harming the plants, and get rid of dead leaves in order to let new ones grow. It is currently 101 degrees outside and I am breaking my back writing this blog entry inside of an air-conditioned building!

Seed Starting

There may still be snow outside, but we are busy planting- tomatoes and peppers inside, brassicas, members of the chicory family and lettuce in a greenhouse outside.  Seeds are germinating and the the 2010 growing season in Montgomery County has begun.
